A book a day can keep the doctor away!

A few recent studies have shown that our increased dependence upon mobile devices is causing us some serious health problems. According to a recent study out of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, spending time with an e-reader, tablet, or smartphone before bed disrupts natural sleep cycles. That’s because the blue light from screens overstimulates your brain, and cuts out its natural slow-down time before bed.

The result isn’t just lost sleep–it’s compromised quality of sleep. The researchers tested trial participants by comparing a group who reads books before bed with people who read from ipads. The people who read from electronics were significantly less well-rested than people who read from the printed page, even if they got the same amount of sleep.

We old school book readers are doing something right! Book readers in the study were much more alert and focused than electronic readers.
